Look for programs that offer:
- Staff members that have been trained in CPR and first aid
- Quality standards for school-aged care
- Accreditation
|
- Documented emergency procedures that are given to parents upon request
- A low student-teacher ratio that provides good engagement between students and adults
- Rich outdoor activities as well as quiet time for students. (Even teenagers need some quiet time)
- Opportunities to use imagination and creativity. Art and music are a great complement to academic content
- Tutoring and project-based assignments. Programs that offer a regular community service component are great additions. Participating in community service projects will help your son become well-rounded
- Projects that encourage kids to read, learn math or experiment with solving everyday problems. (Literacy levels often determine whether schools or prisons are built)
- Opportunities for a mixture of hands-on, social, active and quiet activities
- Activities that encourage communication and writing. Journaling is great for boys. Being able to have your son tell his story is important
- Games, activities or chores that students regularly perform. (Routines – begin homework and/or quite reading for 30-45 minutes)
